The beautiful Portuguese Synagogue is one of the most important legacies of the vibrant Jewish community in Amsterdam.
Its stunning architecture illustrates the self-confidence and wealth of the Jewish community in Amsterdam during the period it was constructed, also boasting status as the largest synagogue of its time and one of the biggest buildings in Amsterdam.
Building of the structure began in 1671 and was completed by 1675, costing approximately 186,000 florins to construct. While minor restorations have been made since then, the synagogue remains largely the same as it appeared when constructed 340 years ago.
