The museum houses a comprehensive collection of Spanish, Catalonian and European modern and contemporary art housed in a striking white building designed by architect Richard Meier.

The permanent collection contains around 5,000 works. There are three periods of modern art represented: the first one covers the 1940's to the 1960's; the second spans the 1960's and 1970's; the third period is contemporary.

The collections focus on post 1945 Catalan and Spanish art, although some International artists are also represented.
