The Summer Palace is located less than 10 miles from the centre of Beijing. Initially constructed in 1750 as the Summer residence of the Emperor, it is the largest and best preserved Royal Park offering excellent views of the city.

The Palace was burnt down in 1900 by British and French armed forces but was rebuilt shortly thereafter. Now a UNESCO world heritate site it offers a relaxing and historically interesting day excursion and provides much of interest to students of Horticulture in particular.
