The iconic Atomium was originally constructed for the Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn with interiors by architects André and Jean Polak, it stands 102m tall. Its nine 18m diameter stainless steel clad spheres are connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.
The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels and the rest contain a number of science related exhibits. Open daily and guided tours can be arranged on your next educational group trip to the Belgian capital.
