About this event

Climate change seminar and workshops

Earth Summit 2024 is designed to educate students aged between 14-18 about the causes and impacts of climate change on our planet, such as global warming and pollution, with a hands-on approach.

The climate change seminar and workshops will be held at Keele University, a leader in climate change research. This location will help inspire students to think critically about the challenges facing climate change and use scientific and geographic solutions to create sustainable development goals.

After a full day of workshops and a night of rest, students can enjoy a fun day at Alton Towers theme park - what better way to unwind?

The event will open with a series of engaging presentations from experts in the climate change industry. Each case study and presentation will give your students unique insights into what inspired them to become pioneers and campaigners in the area, they will no doubt pass on their passion for this important cause.

Speakers for 2024 will be confirmed soon. To give you a flavour of what to expect in 2023 we were joined by:

  • Dr Antonia Law

Senior Lecturer in Geography & Deputy Director (Education) for the Institute for Sustainable Futures

  • Dr Richard Waller
Senior Lecturer in School of Geography, Geology and Environment
  • Hannah Hooper
Programmes Coordinator at Force of Nature, a youth non-profit organisation mobilising mindsets for climate action
  • Dare Ilori & Dominique Sidley
From the largest European entertainments company operating in Europe; Merlin Entertainments

In the afternoon there will be time for you to take part in 2 hands on workshops with experts who are currently making a huge difference working in the climate change industry. This hands-on experience can enlighten your students in career paths in sustainability.

Workshops will be confirmed in early 2024. Here is a taste of some of the workshops students enjoyed in 2023

  • 4ward Futures

Following a 30-minute pre-event webinar, students were set a challenge of working in teams to put together a plan of how professionals from different sectors could work together to address an environmental challenge in the workshop, such as poor air quality, water pollution or the impact of waste plastic in the oceans.

  • Force of Nature

In this workshop, students learned how to understand the relationship between mental health, mindset and climate change; identify the barriers to taking action; hone in on the problem they want to solve and get clear on their vision of the future.

  • UK Atomic Energy Authority
Students learnt about the power of plasma and Fusion Energy and how UKAEA are looking to create a ‘star in a jar’ to provide near limitless sustainable energy.

Climate Science

  • Life on earth, past present and future
  • The evidence for climate change
  • Ecosystems
  • Sustainability challenges

Gatsby Benchmarks

Aside from benefiting your students’ knowledge and raising their social and personal awareness, taking them on climate change school trips  such as the Earth Summit helps schools and colleges meet the following statutory Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Career Guidance:

4 Benchmark 4: Linking curriculum learning to careers
4 Benchmark 5: Encounters with employers and employees
4 Benchmark 7: Encounters with further & higher education

Attending Earth Summit 2024 will help inspire students towards
further study, help them to understand enough about the world of work to know what skills they need to succeed and open students’ eyes to careers they may not have considered.

Keele University

Our event will take place at Keele University, which is leading the sector in sustainability, not just in its ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2030 but also through its teaching and groundbreaking research into climate change and renewable technologies.

They are proud to be one of the first UK universities to declare a 'climate emergency', as well as having ambitious carbon neutral. With Keele having all the elements of a small town, their campus acts as a ‘living laboratory’ for groundbreaking projects.

The university was placed among the Top 40 universities in the world for sustainability, in addition to being named Global Sustainability Institution of the Year in 2020.

Keele was voted Britain’s best university, as ranked by students in the Student Crowd University Awards 2022.

Your students will love the experience of university life while staying on campus in university halls. The beautiful campus has the unique feel of a small town and all of its facilities are within easy reach.

We don’t just support educational needs; we understand the need for fun! That’s why on day 2 of your educational visit, you will visit Alton Towers for some well-earned excitement and thrill-seeking with their friends!

Alton Towers is less than an hour away from Keele University, so well located for you to pack in some thrills on some of Europe's biggest and most exciting roller coasters.
