The Ponte Vecchio is the oldest of the six bridges spanning the River Arno in Florence at its narrowest point.

Originally constructed in Roman times it was destroyed in a flood in the 12th century and was rebuilt only to fall victim to another flood in the 14th century. Then rebuilt, it was the only bridge which remained intact when the Germans retreated in August 1944. Now a major tourist attraction, the bridge still has shops built along it.
