The Gothic style Barbican, built around 1498, is one of only three such fortified bastions still surviving in Europe, and probably the best preserved.

Built to repel Turkish invasion, it was originally surrounded by a moat and linked to the city walls by a covered walkway that led through St. Florian's gate. It was used as a checkpoint for all who entered the city.
