Palatine Hill is another obligatory visit for History students. It is some 40 metres high and has views of the Roman Forum on one side and the Circus Maximus on the other, overlooked at the top by the Farnese Gardens.

According to Roman mythology, Palatine hill was where Romulus and Remus were found by a female wolf that protected them, after which a shepherd named Faustulus found the infants, and with his wife Acca Larentia raised them. When they were older Romulus famously chose the site to build the city of Rome. The site is now a large open-air museum which can be visited during the daytime but can get quite busy during the daytime so it is best to get here early to beat the crowds.
